The changing dynamics of snippets has impacted the SEO market by a great extent. Firstly, the display length of the snippets has increased for all the devices.
The snippets were normally fetched from the Meta descriptions of the web pages. They are normally generated dynamically based on what Meta description the web developer has put in.
This fact, impacts the overall process of writing Meta descriptions of the websites. The snippets length has increased from 160 characters to 230 characters and that it’s why the websites are updating their meta descriptions accordingly.
What will Change?
Certainly with the increase in the length of the snippets the entire ball game of writing the meta descriptions will change. This provides the website designers with an option to increase the meta descriptions in order to fit the bill.
The website owners and marketers must admit that it is something positive for certain. They get more opportunity to make the visitors aware of what the website is all about.
Google’s decision to showcase the complete descriptions in the form of the snippets will certainly provoke the websites to write more in the meta descriptions.
Does it help the Searchers?
It certainly helps the searchers by a great extent. People searching for specific information on the net are now getting the option of reading the entire text in the form of a snippet.
According to experts, a comprehensive snippet will not discourage the browsers to explore more. But rather it will encourage them to visit the website and learn more from it. This is the basic human intuition based on which the idea of showing the snippet was being introduced.
Will it impact the click-through rate?
Experts think that the click-through rates might falter for less complex queries. That means if the searcher gets the answer of a simple query in the snippet itself then he/she might not be tempted to click through the site.
On the other hand, in case of the more complex queries the searcher might very well be enticed to know more about the thing after the reading the detailed snippet.
Will it increase the risk for lower ranked pages?
A longer snippet will necessarily mean a proper meta description. A detailed meta description means writing proper sentences by using the keywords and not just keyword stuffing.
This means that the pages which has properly written meta descriptions will fetch more attention from the searchers whilst they will not bother to scroll down to dig more information from the lower ranking pages.
In that way the lower ranking pages are at a greater risk as with the increase in the length of the snippets will leave no chances of maintaining the vagueness, in the meta descriptions, which was alright to keep, few months ago.
Should the old Meta Descriptions be updated?
It is now an obvious choice for all the SEOs to survive the competition. In order to sustain the competition they definitely need to gear up and reform their meta descriptions.
The descriptions and the tags should be more comprehensive and enticing enough to lure the searchers to enter the website. The marketers must remain cautious about the selection of keywords whilst writing the elongated meta descriptions.
